Bergen, NY (August 7, 2025) – A fatal head-on collision occurred Friday afternoon on Route 33 in Bergen, resulting in the death of one driver and injuries to four others, including two children. The crash was reported at approximately 12:25 p.m., and the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause.
The incident occurred when a 2013 blue Ford Focus, driven by 32-year-old Joseph M. Meli of Batavia, N.Y., attempted to pass a vehicle while traveling eastbound on Route 33. Meli collided head-on with a 2024 gold Hyundai Ioniq 5, which was traveling westbound. Meli was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Hyundai, 32-year-old Mari K. Hamilton of North Chili, N.Y., sustained serious injuries and was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital. Three other passengers were in Hamilton’s vehicle, including Paul A. Hamilton, 35, of North Chili, who suffered serious injuries, and two juveniles who had minor injuries. All passengers were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for further medical treatment.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office. No further details have been released regarding what led to the collision, though officials mentioned that aggressive driving may be a factor.
