Clarion Township, PA (December 29, 2025) – A major section of Interstate 80 Eastbound in Clarion County has fully reopened following a massive multi-vehicle pileup that paralyzed traffic for several hours on Monday, December 29. The chain-reaction crash occurred around 12:52 p.m. between mile markers 69 and 70, near the Strattanville area.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) in Clarion, initial reports indicate that approximately 20 vehicles—including several commercial tractor-trailers—were involved in the collision. The pileup was triggered by sudden, heavy snow squalls that reduced visibility to near zero and left the roadway ice-covered. Multiple emergency agencies, including the Clarion Fire and Hose Company and Clarion Hospital EMS, responded to the scene to assist. While the exact number and severity of injuries have not been officially confirmed, multiple individuals were transported to local medical facilities for treatment. Debris removal and vehicle recovery efforts continued well into the evening before PennDOT cleared the lanes for travel.
Liability and Chain-Reaction Claims in Snow Squall Pileups
Multi-vehicle pileups during “whiteout” conditions present some of the most complex liability challenges in Pennsylvania personal injury law. While snow squalls are considered an “Act of Nature,” drivers are still legally required to operate their vehicles at a speed that is “reasonable and prudent” for the current conditions. In a 20-vehicle pileup, investigators from the PSP Collision Reconstruction Unit will work to determine which driver’s actions initiated the first impact and whether following drivers maintained a safe “assured clear distance” to avoid secondary collisions.
