Rochester, NY (December 29, 2025) – A violent collision involving a vehicle fire resulted in one hospitalization and a police citation late Monday night. The accident occurred at approximately 8:33 p.m. at the intersection of Ford Street and Exchange Boulevard.
According to the Rochester Police Department, a black sedan was traveling northbound on Exchange Boulevard when the driver failed to stop for a red light at the intersection. The black sedan struck a gray sedan with significant force. Moments after the impact, the gray sedan burst into flames. The driver and sole occupant of the gray car, a 34-year-old resident of Greece, managed to exit the vehicle just before it became fully engulfed. The Rochester Fire Department arrived shortly after to extinguish the blaze.
The driver of the black sedan, identified as a 55-year-old Rochester man, was treated by emergency medical personnel for lower body pain before being transported by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital. Police confirmed his injuries are not life-threatening. The 34-year-old driver of the gray sedan was treated at the scene for a minor hand injury. The 55-year-old driver was subsequently issued a traffic ticket for failing to stop at a red light.
Liability and Recovery for Fiery Intersection Crashes in Rochester
The circumstances of the collision at Ford and Exchange highlight the severe dangers of red-light violations in urban areas. In New York, when a driver is ticketed for failing to stop at a red light and causes a crash, they are generally held liable for the resulting damages. The fact that one vehicle caught fire adds a significant layer of property damage and potential trauma to the claim. For the injured driver from Greece, the official police citation serves as critical evidence of negligence, simplifying the process of pursuing a liability claim against the Rochester man’s insurance policy.
