Pedestrian Accidents in New York: Know Your Legal Rights

Pedestrian accidents on New York’s highways and city streets often have devastating consequences. According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), pedestrians account for nearly one in four traffic fatalities statewide. Many of these incidents occur in high-traffic zones or at night, when visibility is reduced and reaction times are limited.

In New York, families who lose loved ones in pedestrian crashes may have the right to pursue wrongful death claims against negligent drivers or responsible parties. Compensation may include coverage for:

  • Funeral and burial costs
  • Medical expenses incurred before death
  • Lost income and benefits
  • Pain and suffering endured by the victim
  • Loss of companionship and support for surviving family members

Under New York law, families generally have two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death lawsuit. Acting quickly allows an attorney to preserve critical evidence, such as accident scene photos, vehicle data, and witness statements, which can be vital to establishing liability.

At Stanley Law Offices, our Syracuse pedestrian accident attorneys have decades of experience handling complex wrongful death and injury cases. We fight for the justice and financial security that grieving families deserve while treating every client with compassion and respect.

We offer free consultations and handle cases on a no-win, no-fee basis, meaning you pay nothing unless we recover compensation for you.
