York County, PA (November 13, 2025) – At least six people were injured Thursday evening after a 12-vehicle crash shut down a major stretch of Interstate 83 in York County, according to PennDOT and local emergency crews.
The multi-vehicle pileup happened around 6:30 p.m. near Exit 39 northbound and involved two tractor-trailers along with several passenger vehicles. Fairview Township Fire Department reported that all northbound lanes were blocked as crews worked to treat the injured and clear debris.
Six individuals were transported to nearby hospitals. Officials have not released information regarding the severity of their injuries, but no fatalities were reported.
Traffic backups created additional hazards. A secondary crash occurred in the diverted traffic near Exit 36, prompting authorities to extend the closure to Exit 35. A third crash later took place on the southbound on-ramp.
The roadway is expected to remain closed for several hours as authorities continue their investigation and remove the involved vehicles.
Multi-Vehicle and Trucking Collisions in Pennsylvania
Large pileups involving tractor-trailers often raise questions about driver negligence, unsafe following distance, weather conditions, roadway design, and mechanical failures. Determining fault can be complex because multiple drivers, commercial carriers, and insurance companies may share liability.
Victims in Pennsylvania may pursue compensation for medical costs, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages. A Pennsylvania big rig accident attorney can help navigate the investigation, secure black-box data, and deal with insurance carriers who frequently dispute responsibility in multi-vehicle events.
