Astoria, NY (August 12, 2025) – Three people were killed in a tragic crash Tuesday morning when a car crashed into a coffee truck and two pedestrians in Astoria, Queens. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of 19th Avenue and 42nd Street.
An 84-year-old driver, whose name has not yet been released, was behind the wheel of a Toyota Corolla that crashed into the truck and two men standing nearby. The driver was transported to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The two male pedestrians, aged 41 and 70, were struck by the vehicle. The 41-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 70-year-old was transported to the hospital where he was also pronounced dead. Eyewitnesses reported the vehicle was speeding before running through a stop sign and slamming into the parked truck.
The Toyota spun around after the impact and collided with a Volvo sedan making a U-turn. The truck’s owner, Giancarlo Caruso, was near the truck when the crash occurred but narrowly avoided injury, saying he was “grateful” for being moved out of the way in time.
The 41-year-old victim was identified as Joaquin Venancio, a father of two and a well-known community member. His brother, Abelardo Venancio, described him as the “best brother” and a kind, generous person. The 70-year-old victim, Santiago Baires, was remembered by his family as a hardworking landscaper and father of eight children, who adored his 14 grandchildren.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities are looking into why the driver lost control. This incident highlights the dangers of speeding in the area, with family members of the victims urging for safer streets.
