Keene, NY (November 17, 2025) – A tragic collision on NYS Route 73 left 57-year-old Tracy Mauler of Saranac Lake dead and 84-year-old Beverly Pickreign critically injured, according to New York State Police.
The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. Monday when a Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling east lost control on slush-covered pavement. The trailer jackknifed and entered the westbound lane.
Mauler, driving a Ford Escape westbound, was unable to avoid the oncoming trailer and struck it. She was found unresponsive at the scene and later declared deceased by the Essex County Coroner.
Pickreign, Mauler’s passenger, was taken to Adirondack Medical Center and then transferred to UVM Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
A Toyota Scion traveling behind Mauler also made contact with the trailer before leaving the roadway and striking a rock wall. All occupants of that vehicle were uninjured, as was the tractor-trailer driver.
Route 73 remained partially restricted as responders cleared debris and conducted accident reconstruction.
Jackknife Crashes on New York Rural Highways
Jackknife collisions involving tractor-trailers often stem from loss of traction, excess speed for conditions, or improper braking on wet or slushy roads. When a truck crosses into oncoming traffic, victims and their families may have grounds to pursue claims for wrongful death, catastrophic injury, and long-term medical needs. Reconstruction data, dash-cam footage, and truck maintenance records typically play a critical role in determining liability.
