Midtown Manhattan, NY (September 24, 2025) – A 50-year-old woman was killed and her 55-year-old husband critically injured Wednesday afternoon in a hit-and-run crash near Bryant Park, police reported.
The couple, tourists from Germany, were struck in the crosswalk around 2:40 p.m. on West 40th Street. A Toyota Sienna minivan, facing eastbound and blocking the intersection with Fifth Avenue, suddenly reversed, pinning them against a stopped box truck.
The husband sustained a skull fracture and was transported to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, but is expected to survive. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 40-year-old driver fled southbound on Fifth Avenue but was located shortly afterward near Eighth Avenue and West 38th Street. He was taken into custody, and the investigation remains ongoing.
