Glenville, NY – Trooper & Driver Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash on Route 50

Trooper & Driver Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash

Glenville, NY (April 16, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash on State Route 50 in Glenville sent a New York State trooper and another driver to the hospital Thursday afternoon.

According to New York State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 12:25 p.m. when the trooper was traveling southbound on Route 50 with lights and sirens activated while responding to a call in Schenectady. The patrol vehicle collided with another southbound car that was attempting to make a left turn.

The collision caused the trooper’s vehicle to overturn and strike two utility poles. Both drivers were transported to Ellis Hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

A portion of Route 50 was closed while crews repaired the damaged utility poles. The Glenville Police Department assisted with traffic management as the investigation continues.

Trooper-Involved Collision Liability Under New York Law

Crashes involving law enforcement vehicles raise distinct legal questions under New York law. When a police vehicle or state trooper cruiser is involved in a collision, questions of governmental immunity, emergency vehicle operation statutes, and standard negligence principles all come into play. New York Vehicle and Traffic Law generally permits emergency vehicles to disregard certain traffic rules when responding to calls, but that authorization does not eliminate liability when officers fail to exercise due care for the safety of others on the road.

New York follows a Pure Comparative Negligence standard, meaning that any party injured in a crash — regardless of their own share of fault — may still pursue a claim for damages. However, claims against a government entity such as the New York State Police require careful attention to procedural requirements, including the filing of a Notice of Claim within 90 days of the incident. The statute of limitations for personal injury claims in New York is generally three years, and two years for wrongful death. Because accidents involving government vehicles on high-traffic corridors like Route 50 can involve complex liability questions, consulting with an experienced Upstate New York car accident attorney as soon as possible is an important step in protecting your rights and preserving critical evidence.
