46-Year-Old E-Bike Rider Killed in Collision

Albany, NY (January 4, 2026) – A tragic early-morning accident in Albany has claimed the life of a 46-year-old electric bicycle rider. The collision occurred at approximately 1:10 a.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the intersection of Clinton Avenue and Ten Broeck Street in the Arbor Hill neighborhood.

According to the Albany Police Department, the 46-year-old male was traveling southbound on Ten Broeck Street on an electric bike when he attempted to turn left onto Clinton Avenue. During the maneuver, the e-bike struck the passenger side of a vehicle that was traveling westbound on Clinton Avenue. Responding officers found the man in the roadway with severe injuries. He was treated at the scene by Albany Fire Department paramedics before being transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and has been fully cooperative with investigators. The victim’s identity is currently being withheld by authorities pending the completion of family notifications. Clinton Avenue was partially closed for several hours while the Albany Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit processed the scene and conducted a reconstruction of the crash.

Liability and Safety Regulations in E-Bike Intersection Accidents

As electric bikes become more prevalent on New York roadways, accidents at intersections involve complex determinations of right-of-way and vehicle classification. Under New York State law, e-bike riders are required to follow the same rules of the road as traditional bicyclists, which includes stopping at red lights and yielding the right-of-way when entering a main thoroughfare from a side street. If a rider enters an intersection and strikes the side of a passing vehicle, investigators look closely at factors such as visibility, speed, and whether the motor vehicle driver had sufficient time to react.
