Albany, NY – 28-Year-Old Arrested After Multi-Vehicle Crash Injures One on Northern Boulevard

Arrested After Multi-Vehicle Crash Injures

Albany, NY (May 14, 2026) – One person was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening head injury Thursday afternoon following a multi-vehicle crash on Northern Boulevard near Route 9.

According to the Albany Police Department, officers responded to Northern Boulevard near Route 9 at approximately 1:40 p.m. after receiving reports of a crash. Police determined that Jaheem Anthony, 28, of Albany, was driving a car that struck a dump truck before fleeing the scene. The impact caused the dump truck to collide with another vehicle, injuring one man who was taken to Albany Medical Center with a non-life-threatening head injury.

Officers later located Anthony on Shaker Road and arrested him. He was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, leaving the scene of a personal injury auto accident, and unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

The investigation remains ongoing. All lanes of Northern Boulevard were closed near the crash site until just before 2:30 p.m. during the investigation.

Hit-and-Run Liability and Victim Rights Under New York Law

When a driver causes a crash while under the influence, flees the scene, and operates without a license, you as an injured victim face both criminal conduct and civil liability issues. Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 600, leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury is a criminal offense, but you also have civil remedies available. In cases involving hit-and-run drivers, you may pursue compensation through your own uninsured motorist (UM) coverage if the at-fault driver lacks insurance or cannot be identified. When the driver is located and charged, as in this case, you can file claims against the driver’s liability insurance and may also pursue additional damages for pain and suffering if your injuries meet New York’s serious injury threshold under Insurance Law § 5102(d).

New York operates under a No-Fault insurance system, which provides up to $50,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits for your immediate medical expenses and lost wages regardless of who caused the crash. However, if your injuries involve significant disfigurement, bone fractures, permanent limitation of body function, or other qualifying conditions, you may step outside the No-Fault system to pursue full compensation. The alleged conduct here, driving under the influence, fleeing the scene, and operating without a license, may also support punitive damages claims in civil court, particularly if your injuries prove severe or long-lasting. Evidence preservation is critical in these cases, as police reports, witness statements, surveillance footage, and medical records all play essential roles in establishing liability and damages. Consulting an experienced Upstate New York car accident lawyer as soon as possible can help protect your rights and preserve critical evidence.
