Town of Ellisburg, NY – Head-On Crash at Southwick Beach State Park Entrance Injures Two Drivers

Head-On Crash at Southwick Beach State Park Entrance

Town of Ellisburg, NY (Sept 7, 2026) – Two drivers are recovering after their SUVs collided head-on near the entrance to Southwick Beach State Park in the town of Ellisburg.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says a 56-year-old woman was headed north on State Route 3 and was in the process of turning into the park when her SUV struck a second SUV traveling south, driven by a 24-year-old man. Both drivers suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening. The man was brought to a Syracuse hospital by ground ambulance, while the woman required a LifeNet helicopter transport.

The collision shut down access to the park for close to an hour and closed a section of Route 3 for several hours while the scene was cleared. Deputies have not yet concluded their investigation.

A left turn across a highway takes only a few seconds, but it requires a driver to correctly judge the speed and distance of every oncoming car. Getting that judgment wrong, even briefly, can put two vehicles on a collision course with almost no time to avoid it.

Head-On Car Crash Near Watertown, NY

Head-on crashes like this one are especially common on two-lane highways near Watertown and throughout rural Jefferson County, where routes like State Route 3 often have no median barrier and carry cars, trucks, and seasonal park traffic at full highway speed in both directions. When two vehicles close that distance toward each other instead of approaching from the side or from behind, the combined force of impact is far greater, which is part of why head-on collisions consistently produce some of the most serious injuries seen in car accident cases.

Police describing injuries as “non-life-threatening” does not mean those injuries are minor. A LifeNet helicopter transport is reserved for cases serious enough that ground transport would take too long or add too much risk, and a trip to a Syracuse hospital after a Jefferson County crash suggests real, significant treatment needs, the kind that can mean surgery, months of physical therapy, and missed paychecks long after the police report is filed.

If you were the driver heading south on Route 3, or you have been hurt in a similar head-on crash near Watertown, you were not the one required to make the turn safely, they were. New York law places that responsibility on the driver crossing into oncoming traffic, and an attorney familiar with these rural highways can request the full accident report, document your treatment as it happens, and deal directly with the insurance company so you are not pressured into a quick settlement before you know the full extent of what you are dealing with.
