Charlton, NY – Jean and Torben Aabo Fatally Struck Leaving Memorial Dinner

Elderly couple fatally struck

Charlton, NY (November 25, 2025) – State Police have identified the two pedestrians who were fatally struck Tuesday evening in Charlton as husband and wife, Jean Aabo (78) and Torben Aabo (85), both residents of Charlton.

New York State Police report the couple had been attending a memorial dinner for a local firefighter at the Charlton Tavern. They were walking north across Charlton Road near Maple Avenue toward a parking area when they were hit by a westbound vehicle at approximately 5:18 p.m.

The victims were taken to the hospital but sadly succumbed to their injuries. The investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing.

Understanding Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death in New York

Accidents resulting in the death of pedestrians, especially when crossing a road near an event, require a thorough investigation into the driver’s duty of care. Although the couple was crossing the roadway, drivers in New York are responsible for watching the road and maintaining control to avoid hitting pedestrians.

For the surviving family members of Jean and Torben Aabo, New York law permits the pursuit of a wrongful death claim if driver negligence is found to be a factor. A wrongful death action requests compensation for economic losses suffered by the surviving relatives, which includes funeral costs, medical bills incurred before death, and the loss of support and guidance the deceased provided.

Seeking counsel from a qualified New York wrongful death attorney early helps preserve evidence and work through the legal and insurance issues following such a tragedy.
