Franklin Township, PA – Pedestrian Struck and Killed on PA Turnpike Near Lehighton

Pedestrian Struck and Killed

Franklin Township, PA (January 1, 2026) – Authorities in Carbon County are investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian that occurred during the early morning hours of Thursday, January 1, 2026. The collision took place at approximately 4:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police and the Carbon County Coroner’s Office, the incident occurred at mile marker 76.2, just north of Exit 74 (Mahoning Valley) in Franklin Township. First responders arrived at the scene to find a male pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle. Deputy Coroner Jason Nicholas pronounced the man dead at the scene. While the identity of the deceased has not yet been publicly released pending family notification, officials confirmed that an autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning to determine the exact cause and manner of death. The northbound lanes experienced significant delays for several hours while investigators processed the scene, but the roadway has since been reopened.

Liability and Insurance Recovery for Pedestrian Accidents on Limited-Access Highways

Pedestrian accidents on major highways like the Pennsylvania Turnpike present unique and complex legal challenges regarding liability. Under Pennsylvania law, pedestrians are generally prohibited from walking along limited-access highways unless they are attending to a disabled vehicle. However, drivers are still required to maintain a high level of vigilance, especially during the pre-dawn hours when visibility is low. If a driver was speeding, distracted, or failed to see a pedestrian who was visible on the roadway or shoulder, they may be found partially or fully liable for the collision.
