Amherst, NY (April 14, 2026) — A 43-year-old Amherst man was killed, and two others were hospitalized, on Tuesday evening after a violent three-car crash on Hopkins Road, according to the Amherst Police Department.
Police responded to the scene before 6:00 p.m., where a Ford Mustang driven northbound by the 43-year-old Amherst man collided head-on with a Honda Pilot traveling in the opposite direction, driven by a 56-year-old man. The force of that initial collision pushed the Honda Pilot into a GMC Terrain driven by a 79-year-old woman.
The Mustang driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The drivers of the Honda Pilot and GMC Terrain were both transported to Erie County Medical Center, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The crash left all three vehicles with serious damage. Anyone with information or footage is asked to contact Amherst Police. The investigation is active and ongoing.
Multi-Vehicle Collision Liability Under New York Traffic Law
Crashes involving multiple vehicles on suburban roadways like Hopkins Road can give rise to complex questions about who bears responsibility for the resulting injuries and property damage. New York follows a pure comparative negligence standard, meaning that an injured person may still recover compensation even if they are found to be partially at fault, though their recovery is reduced in proportion to their share of fault.
In accidents where several vehicles are involved, liability may extend to more than one driver, and each party’s insurer will conduct its own investigation. Under New York’s No-Fault system, injured victims first turn to their own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage for medical expenses and lost wages up to $50,000. To pursue a claim for pain and suffering, a victim must meet the serious injury threshold established under New York Insurance Law § 5102(d). Given that some vehicles in this crash sustained serious damage, occupants may well qualify.
Because physical evidence and surveillance footage are often lost or overwritten quickly after a crash, prompt action is critical. Working with an experienced New York car accident attorney can help victims in Amherst and throughout Erie County preserve evidence, identify all liable parties, and file claims well within the three-year statute of limitations for personal injury in New York.
