State Trooper & Driver Injured in Route 104 Crash

Ontario, NY (February 25, 2026) — An intersection collision in Wayne County left a New York State Trooper and another motorist injured on Tuesday afternoon. The accident occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 104 and Knickerbocker Road.

According to New York State Police, an eastbound van was attempting to make a left-hand turn from Route 104 onto Knickerbocker Road. During the maneuver, the van failed to yield the right of way, resulting in a direct collision with a State Police patrol car. The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles and forced the closure of the intersection for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

Trooper Lynnea Crane reported that both drivers were conscious and communicative following the crash. The State Trooper was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment, while the driver of the van was taken to Rochester General Hospital for medical evaluation. The names of those involved have not yet been released as the investigation continues.

Accident with Police Vehicle in New York

Failure-to-yield accidents at busy intersections like Route 104 are among the most common causes of serious injury in Upstate New York. Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law, drivers making a left turn must yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction that is within the intersection or so close as to constitute an immediate hazard. When one of those vehicles is a police car or emergency vehicle, additional “Move Over” and safety statutes may apply, depending on whether the officer was responding to an emergency at the time of the impact.

In New York, these cases are initially processed through the No-Fault insurance system, which provides coverage for medical expenses and lost wages regardless of who caused the crash. However, if the injuries sustained by the Trooper or the other driver are deemed “serious” under state law—including fractures, significant disfigurement, or injuries that cause 90 days of disability—the injured party may pursue a personal injury lawsuit against the negligent driver.

An experienced New York car accident attorney serves as a dedicated advocate by meticulously reviewing the police report, analyzing traffic light patterns, and securing any available dashcam or intersection surveillance footage. This is vital to ensuring that the insurance companies accurately assign fault. A legal professional also protects the rights of injured parties by managing the strict filing deadlines, such as the 30-day window for No-Fault applications.
