Fatal Car Accidents in New York
Losing a loved one in a tragic crash is one of the most painful experiences a family can endure. In New York, families of fatal accident victims may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims to recover compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, lost future income, and emotional suffering.
According to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), there are more than 1,000 fatal crashes each year across the state, with many involving young drivers and rural roadways. When a fatal collision occurs, families have the right to hold negligent drivers or responsible parties accountable through legal action.
Under New York law, the statute of limitations for filing a wrongful death lawsuit is two years from the date of the person’s death. However, acting quickly is critical to preserve vital evidence, such as accident reports, vehicle data, and witness testimony, that can strengthen a case.
