It’s slippery out there!
Slipping and falling. Even though we live in the northeast and deal with this weather winter after winter, people still fall. It can be dangerous. I’ve had so many calls this month alone about people slipping and falling. On sidewalks, in parking garages, in work parking lots and driveways. Nobody wants that it’s horrible. People don’t realize just how hurt you can get from a slip and fall. It’s some of the top types of cases we handle here at Stanley Law. And although yes it’s part of our business, we don’t want you to get hurt so be safe out there and slow down! I always say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Keeping things safe for you, your family, your employees
We really need to take care of walkways and areas where people are needing to go on foot. The fractures, the surgeries, the number of slips and falls this winter has been some of the most I’ve ever seen. It’s a reminder to please keep everyone safe because that’s really what’s important. It may seem futile because more snow and ice and melt is coming. That’s our way of life of ebbs and flows of weather here in winter. It’s just part of the deal. If you’re an employer, ANY time of the year it’s important to keep things safe for your workers. Here are some tips for doing just that.
Driveways
Driveways are particularly dangerous because the black ice that builds up isn’t always detectable but trust me, it’s there and it’s dangerous! The day you don’t throw the salt down and keep it clear is the day YOU go out there and fall down. So even if it feels like you’re just doing it over and over, that’s because you are – but that’s where we live and you need to keep it safe. We had this windstorm where I live and I’ve now got this massive branch that’s stuck up in the trees that looks like it’s ready to fall onto my driveway. I can’t get to it, it’s huge, and I’m afraid it’s going to fall down and hurt someone. So I have to pay somebody with a bucket truck to come get it – because that’s just part of the bad weather we’ve had and who would want to take the chance of getting hurt!?
Extra effort
Take the extra time – slow down, don’t rush and watch where you’re walking. If your driveway or parking lot or walkways at work are not properly being attended to by your employer, put your employer on notice – have it noted that the conditions are not acceptable and someone’s going to get hurt. And if it’s your own home, take care of it. I know it can be hard work, but it’s much worse if you or someone you care about is injured. That’s a road you do NOT want to walk down.
