You’re not just planning for what you’re taking with you, but you’re also planning for what you’re leaving behind.
Summer Vacations: What To Know Before You Go: It’s one of the most celebrated times of the year… summertime in Central New York. With the arrival of August, families plan their last minute getaways before sending kids off to college or back to school. There are a few simple steps to know before you go – and things to be mindful of to make the most of your vacation and keep everyone safe.
Social Media and Summer Vacations
One thing that you have to remember about your digital footprint, is that you shouldn’t be telling people that you’re not going to be home for any period of time, because that’s just an invitation to hackers and other people to take advantage of that situation. Certainly for your family’s security if you’re going to post pictures and share memories online, do it AFTER you return from your vacation. It’s just smart.
At Your House
Go through a checklist for your house itself. You want to be sure if you’re going to be away for awhile while to turn your appliances off depending on how long you’ll be gone. If you have a security system, make sure it’s working. If you’ve got an alarm system and it’s hooked into your smartphone, make sure that’s all working. For instance, I have a dehumidifier and I was away for a few days and I, fortunately I remembered because it’s failed on me before… turn it on, put it on a place where it drains into a sink mat, not overflowing or shutting off. You don’t want to come back to a situation that was worse than when you left.
