Hollis, New York (December 29, 2025) – A 40-year-old moped rider has died following a violent collision with an SUV at a busy Queens intersection on Monday night, December 29, 2025. According to the NYPD, the accident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of 204th Street and Jamaica Avenue in Hollis. A preliminary review by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad found that the man was operating a 2024 Zhejiang Jiajue gas-powered moped eastbound on Jamaica Avenue.
As the moped approached the intersection, a 23-year-old woman driving a 2021 Honda CR-V was traveling northbound on 204th Street. Police stated that the driver of the SUV began making a left-hand turn on a green light to head west on Jamaica Avenue when the moped rider collided with her vehicle. The force of the impact caused the moped to continue moving eastbound until the rider struck a fire hydrant. First responders transported the 40-year-old man to North Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Honda CR-V remained at the scene and did not report any injuries.
Liability and Insurance Challenges in Moped-SUV Collisions
Determining liability in accidents involving gas-powered mopeds and turning SUVs requires a detailed analysis of traffic signals and right-of-way. In New York, even if a driver is making a turn on a green light, they must still yield to vehicles approaching from the opposite direction that are close enough to constitute an immediate hazard. However, the investigation will also examine the moped rider’s speed and whether the moped was properly registered and operated within the legal requirements for gas-powered cycles. Under the state’s pure comparative negligence standard, the percentage of fault assigned to each party will directly impact the ability of the deceased rider’s estate to recover damages.
