Sodus, NY – Claude Krieger Killed in Route 104 Head-On Crash

Claude Krieger Killed in Route 104

Sodus, NY (February 28, 2026) — A head-on collision on State Route 104 claimed the life of a Red Creek man and left another driver seriously injured on Friday morning. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deceased as 77-year-old Claude Krieger.

The accident occurred on the morning of February 27, just east of the intersection with State Route 14. According to preliminary findings by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Krieger was traveling eastbound on Route 104 when his vehicle crossed the center line for reasons still under investigation. His vehicle struck an oncoming westbound car driven by 70-year-old Philip Adamy of Hannibal.

Mr. Krieger was tragically pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Mr. Adamy became entrapped in the wreckage of his vehicle and required a complex extrication by local fire crews. He was subsequently transported to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with a serious head injury. Route 104 was closed for several hours between Route 14 and Preemption Road while the Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Unit mapped the scene.

Head-On Accident in New York

Head-on collisions are often the most lethal due to the combined speeds of both vehicles. In New York, these incidents are initially handled through No-Fault insurance, which covers immediate medical bills and funeral costs. However, because this crash resulted in a fatality and a serious head injury, the legal options extend beyond basic insurance. Under New York law, the family of a deceased victim or a seriously injured survivor can pursue a wrongful death or personal injury claim if it can be proven that the other party’s negligence caused the crash.

In a cross-over accident, investigators look at a wide range of factors, including potential medical emergencies, distracted driving, or mechanical failures. If a vehicle drifts into oncoming traffic due to a medical episode, it may complicate liability, but if the drift was caused by a lack of attention or excessive speed, the at-fault driver’s estate or insurance can be held responsible for the resulting damages.

Time is a critical factor in these cases. While the statute of limitations for a wrongful death claim in New York is two years, and for personal injury is three years, the physical evidence at a crash site disappears within days. Securing “black box” data from the vehicles and obtaining statements from witnesses who may have seen the vehicle drifting prior to the impact is essential.
