North Salem, NY – Pedestrian Struck and Killed on I-684 South Near Exit 8

Pedestrian Struck and Killed on I-684

North Salem, NY (January 5, 2026) – A tragic pedestrian accident early Monday morning claimed the life of a man on Interstate 684 in northern Westchester County. The collision occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2026, in the southbound lanes near mile marker 24.3.

According to the New York State Police from the Somers barracks, a preliminary investigation determined that a male pedestrian was walking in the left lane of the highway when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. The incident happened just north of Exit 8 for Hardscrabble Road in the Croton Falls section of North Salem. Troopers arriving at the scene observed a black SUV with a cracked windshield, which was being examined as part of the investigation.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is currently being withheld by state authorities pending the notification of his next of kin. Following the crash, all three southbound lanes were closed for over six hours as the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the Collision Investigation Squad processed the scene. All lanes were reopened to traffic by 8:30 a.m.

Liability and Recovery in High-Speed Pedestrian Highway Accidents

Fatal accidents involving pedestrians on limited-access highways like I-684 present complex legal challenges regarding liability and the “duty of care.” While pedestrians are generally prohibited from walking on interstates, New York law still requires motorists to maintain a high degree of vigilance and to operate their vehicles at a speed that is reasonable for the conditions. If a driver was speeding, distracted, or failed to take evasive action when a pedestrian was visible, they may be found partially or fully liable for the tragedy.
