Bronx, NY – MTA Bus Crash Injures 8 Near E. 163 St.; Mechanical Failure Suspected

MTA Bus Crash Injures 8

Bronx, New York (December 15, 2025) – Eight people, including the driver and seven passengers, were injured and rushed to the hospital after an MTA bus lost control and collided with multiple vehicles in the Bronx on Monday afternoon.

The crash occurred just before 2 p.m. at 665 East 163rd Street, near Cauldwell and Trinity Avenue. The out-of-control Bx6 bus reportedly struck and damaged at least four vehicles over a stretch of about five blocks, including a sedan shoved into a light pole, and an SUV pushed onto the sidewalk. Witness Isiah Ross noted the “back of the car gone,” expressing relief that no one was in the back seat of one of the struck cars.

The injured—the 63-year-old bus driver and seven passengers—were all taken to Lincoln Medical. Officials reported that five of the victims sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while three others suffered minor injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but police sources indicated that the driver lost control after attempting to accelerate up a hill, at which point the bus may have suffered a mechanical failure, potentially leading to an uncontrollable slide when the emergency brake was applied. The MTA is investigating mechanical failure, weather, or a driver’s medical condition as possible factors.

Establishing Liability and Filing Claims Against the MTA in New York

This incident involves potential liability for a government entity, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), and requires specific procedural steps from all eight injured bus passengers, the bus driver, and the occupants and owners of the four damaged vehicles. New York law treats claims against the MTA differently from standard personal injury cases; specifically, an injured party must file a Notice of Claim within 90 days of the accident date, a mandatory deadline that is strictly enforced and which, if missed, can permanently bar the right to compensation.
