Two-Vehicle Collision Injures Four on Oriskany

Whitestown, NY (May 18, 2026) – Four people were injured Monday afternoon when a Jeep collided with a corrections transport van at the intersection of Oriskany Boulevard and State Route 291, according to reports.

The crash was reported at approximately 4:20 p.m. in the town of Whitestown, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol. Benjamin Nelson was traveling eastbound on Oriskany Boulevard and failed to yield the right of way while attempting to turn left onto State Route 291. His Jeep struck a westbound corrections transport van operated by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Samantha Wright, a corrections transport officer, was driving the van with another corrections officer and two inmates at the time of the collision, Maciol said. All four occupants of the van were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Government Vehicle Accidents in Oneida County, New York

When a collision involves a vehicle operated by a government agency, such as a county sheriff’s transport van, the legal process differs from standard car accident claims. Here is what injured parties should know:

Who may be held responsible:

  • The government entity operating the vehicle, if negligence by its employee caused the crash
  • Any other driver whose actions contributed to the collision

What attorneys and investigators examine:

  • Whether the government driver violated traffic laws or operated the vehicle negligently
  • Vehicle maintenance records and dispatch logs
  • Witness statements and accident scene evidence
  • Any available camera footage or GPS data

New York’s Notice of Claim requirement:

Claims against a government entity in New York require filing a Notice of Claim within 90 days of the accident. This strict deadline does not apply to ordinary car accident cases. Missing it can bar your claim entirely, making prompt legal action essential.

New York’s comparative negligence standard:

New York follows a pure comparative negligence rule. An injured party can recover damages even if partially at fault. Compensation is reduced by the percentage of fault assigned to that party, but recovery is not barred entirely.
