Cyber Security

Every week I get asked questions on the radio that matter to you. Just recently I was asked about online/cyber security. Let’s take a few minutes to look at what’s new and what you need to know to protect yourself online. While the landscape is ever-changing, these next few minutes can prove helpful.

As the world becomes increasingly connected, our reliance on the internet has grown exponentially. From online shopping to social networking, the internet has revolutionized the way we interact, work, and conduct business. However, with these conveniences come significant cyber threats. Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics to exploit vulnerabilities and steal sensitive information. As consumers, it’s essential to stay vigilant and take proactive steps to protect ourselves online.

The World is ever changing.

Let’s take a minute to explore some recent examples of cyber threats and provide practical tips on how to best safeguard your online presence. What’s pretty remarkable is that 10 years ago we never would’ve even thought about the possibility of what I’m going to share here that’s on the horizon for all of us with the US federal government. We wouldn’t even have dreamed about it. But the US government is proposing that there be voluntary standards for manufacturers of electronics and appliances to meet minimum cybersecurity standards, and that they will get the US cyber trust mark of approval. Because the government now has serious concerns that all of our devices from baby monitors, refrigerators, stoves, TVs, are all on the internet and they’re all subject to easy hacking and it causes problems for all of us. So they need to ‘up’ the cybersecurity on everything.

Cybersecurity is going to even become more important as time goes on. This is only the beginning. More and more companies are launching and specializing in helping keep you, your family, your business safe.

Here are some helpful tips to practice continuously to help ensure better online safety:

Top Tips to Safeguard Your Online Presence: Staying Cyber-Smart in Today’s Digital World

1. Beware of Phishing Attempts:

Phishing remains one of the most prevalent cyber threats today. Cybercriminals attempt to trick users into divulging personal information or login credentials through deceptive emails, messages, or websites. Recently, there have been instances of sophisticated phishing campaigns that closely mimic legitimate websites, making it harder for users to identify fake ones. To protect yourself, always double-check the sender’s email address, refrain from clicking on suspicious links, and verify the website’s security before entering sensitive data.

2. Strengthen Passwords and Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):

Passwords are often the first line of defense against unauthorized access to our accounts. However, weak or reused passwords can put your online security at risk. Recent data breaches have exposed millions of user credentials, making it crucial to use strong and unique passwords for each account. Consider using a password manager to keep track of your credentials securely. Additionally, enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) wherever possible, as this adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorized logins.

3. Keep Software and Devices Updated:

Cybercriminals frequently exploit software vulnerabilities to gain access to devices and networks. To prevent this, ensure that all your devices, including smartphones, computers, and routers, are running the latest software updates. Software developers regularly release patches to fix security flaws, and by staying up-to-date, you make it harder for attackers to exploit known vulnerabilities.

4. Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi:

Public Wi-Fi networks are convenient but often insecure. Cybercriminals can intercept data transmitted over these networks, potentially compromising sensitive information. Avoid accessing sensitive accounts or conducting financial transactions while connected to public Wi-Fi. If you must use public Wi-Fi, consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection and protect your data from prying eyes. In general, I always advise against using any form of public Wi-Fi.

5. Be Wary of App Permissions:

Mobile apps can be a goldmine of personal information. Recent examples have shown that some apps request excessive permissions that are unnecessary for their functionality, potentially putting user data at risk. When installing apps, review the permissions they request and be cautious if an app seeks access to information it doesn’t need to operate.

As we continue to embrace the digital age, cyber threats will persist. However, with a proactive approach to online security, consumers can protect themselves and reduce their risk of falling victim to cybercrime. By staying vigilant against phishing attempts, using strong passwords and MFA, keeping devices and software updated, being cautious with public Wi-Fi, and reviewing app permissions, you can fortify your online defenses and enjoy a safer digital experience. Remember, the responsibility to safeguard your online presence lies in your hands – be cyber-smart and stay protected!
